Saint Mary’s Nursery School hosted [our] first Big Kid Play Day on Friday, April 27, 2012. Grandparents, other extended family members, and family friends came to the school to enjoy a day of play and learning with their littlest loved ones. The program featured a luncheon–thanks to the generosity of neighbor Qdoba—with Andrea Mosko, Executive Director. Andrea shared anecdotes from the school’s nearly 50 years of history as well as information about [our] educational program and unique combination of a Reggio Emilia philosophy blended with a cooperative structure.
The classroom atmosphere was enhanced as the “Big Kids” took part in meeting time, snack, and free play. The children enjoyed interacting with their guests through imaginary play, block building projects, and being together on the school’s playground for tire swing rides, jump rope and human jungle gym. The highlight of the day was a performance that the children put on for their guests in the school’s big room. The opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones and also with Saint Mary’s extraordinary teachers was appreciated by all.
Big Kid Play Day kicked off a weekend that also included the school’s annual spring fundraiser, Spring For Our School. This year’s event, held at Penn’s LGBT Center, was dedicated to raising funds to enhance the school’s classroom spaces and playground equipment. The crowd—of 100 plus–enjoyed food contributed by Honest Tom’s Tacos and Spruce Hill Pastries, as well as refreshments donated by Barefoot Winery and Philadelphia Brewing Company. Following the event, the fun continued at City Tap House who graciously sponsored a post-party.
Saint Mary’s Nursery School is incredibly grateful to everyone who participated—thanks to all of your contributions the event was a smashing success—Saint Mary’s raised nearly $15,000 to enhance the school’s spaces both indoors and outdoors!
