The Bunnies Make Play Dough
At Circle this morning we read “Where the Wild Things Are” (Sendak), before gathering around our enormous mixing bowl to make (no-cook) a batch of play dough. We first read (numbers) our recipe, then talked about the ingredients needed (solids vs. liquids), before taking a closer look at our kitchen measuring tools (standard units/cups and spoons i.e 1 cup and 1 tablespoon). Ingredients were slowly added (one by one), and then the Bunnies took turns to mix and stir everything (dry and wet) together. The Bunnies “voted” for their play dough color preference by putting their “signatures”/marks on either a sheet of yellow, red, green or blue construction paper (representing food coloring choices) taped to our chalkboard. Because there was a tie (three votes each for red and green (one for yellow and two for blue) the kids voted a second time, this round choosing only from red or green… our final vote was 5 red, 4 green, a very close call, indeed! It should be noted that the bakers helped each other every step of the way (keeping their mixing bowl steady while stirring). Once the ingredients had begun to “come together” (be incorporated) we dumped its contents onto the round table for a final hand/finger “mixing” (kneed, mash, pound). The Bunnies “worked” (sculpted) their dough into “snowmen”, “snakes” and a variety of “foods” (they used popsicle sticks to make texture and/or cut their balls of dough). All hands were on deck for today’s fine motor practice activity!
